Hello readers! How is the hustle and bustle of the back to school season? The season of developing new sleeping patterns, early morning break-downs for younger students, and (my least favorite) the sharing of colds. I’m actually enjoying the quiet house after a long summer, though by 2:00 I’m dying to pick up my little munchkins.
Seems like as soon as school started, fall sent her winds in advance blowing in cold and rain to ruffle the fading leaves. I love the change of the seasons. What better way to spend a nice cold morning than curled up with a soft blanket and cup of coffee to enjoy a read. I’m buckling down on my reading list, and happened to run across a new-to-me author on Facebook.
Denise Weimer is an author for Barbour Publishing, managing editor at Lighthouse Publishing of the Carolinas, and also an author at Lighthouse Publishing of the Carolinas. Her latest novel, The Witness Tree, is a story about a newly married couple, John and Clarissa, in the early 19th century who travel as missionaries to the Cherokee Nation. Having an arranged marriage, they also wade the turbulent waters of past regrets, deception, and future hopes.
This book is rich in historical detail, including the practices and theologies of the Moravian—a Protestant denomination with German roots. Denise’s representation of the Cherokee Nation of that time is, likewise, entertaining if you enjoy history. The romance was sweet and clean, with some tension and challenges. A noticed some jargon seemed slightly modern, which might offend some staunch historical readers. 😉 But, as a whole, this is a good, enjoyable Christian read.
About the Book
Past betrayal has turned John Kliest’s passion to his work as a builder and surveyor in the Moravian town of Salem, North Carolina. Now, to satisfy the elders’ edict and fulfill his mission in Cherokee Territory, he needs a bride. But the one woman qualified to record the Cherokee language longs for a future with his younger brother.
Clarissa Vogler’s dream of a life with Daniel Kliest is shattered when she is chosen by lot to marry his older brother and venture into the uncharted frontier. Can she learn to love this stoic man who is now her husband? Her survival hinges on being able to trust him—but they both harbor secrets.
