Thank you for reading this post. You know, I don’t have much time for reading (aside from the many textbooks I go through for school) so any little book or blog post I can squeeze in is a treasure. I had the privilege of reading a historical romance, A Love Restored, by Kelly Goshorn, and I thought I’d share my thoughts on this book.
(By the way, next week Kelly will be visiting for an interview and give away so mark your calendars!)
In A Love Restored Ruth Ann and Benjamin counter social expectations, each in their own unique way. For Ruth Ann, she battles prejudices when community members threaten her for teaching a freedman school. She also struggles with criticisms from family and friends concerning her less-than-perfect figure. For Benjamin, he’s decided to never marry a lady who is overweight. I know, I wanted to shake him by the neck too. But, as always with the focus of outer appearance, a deeper hurt is hidden, and the same goes for Benjamin. Don’t worry, when he trusts God, their chance for happily-ever-after is possible.
Well, that’s what stood out to me most about this lovely book. I might add it is also filled with plenty of humor, as Benjamin is quite the jokester and Ruth Ann quick-witted. I recommend this book because, along with the inspirational theme, it is an enjoyable read full of historical details and family fun.
About the book:
With pert opinions and a less-than-perfect figure, Ruth Ann Sutton doesn’t measure up to society’s vision of a perfect lady. When she accepts a position teaching in a Freedman’s School, it threatens the only marriage offer Ruth Ann is likely to receive. She’s forced to choose between life as a lonely spinster or reinventing herself to secure a respectable proposal.
Determined to rise above his meager beginnings, Benjamin Coulter’s reputation as a fast learner and hard worker earn him the opportunity to apprentice with a surveyor for the railroad—a position that will garner the respect of other men. After a chance encounter with Ruth Ann Sutton, Benjamin is smitten with her pretty face, quick wit, and feisty personality.
When others ridicule his choice, will Benjamin listen to his heart or put ambition first?
